    Chocolate Lovers Rejoice!

If you love chocolate, you won’t want to miss this delicious morsel: the Ethel M Chocolate Factory, tucked into the southwest corner of the Vegas community.

Founded by Forrest Mars and named for his mother, the Ethel M Chocolate Factory produces gourmet chocolate through recipes that haven’t changed since their inception. In fact, the factory is still family-owned and operated; chocolate is produced in small batches and boxed by hand; and the chocolate is crafted solely with premium ingredients. As the factory likes to say, “Eat chocolate, not preservatives.”

That’s not to say the famed chocolatiers don’t innovate. A few years ago, under the leadership of then head pastry chef Jin Caldwell, they produced a new line of dozens of custom designed, handmade chocolates while simultaneously re-releasing several varieties of classic, old-school chocolates.

The chocolate factory is a certified hit: it attracts almost 1 million visitors from all over the world visit every year. They come for the chocolate; for the free, self-guided factory tour; and for the beautiful Botanical Cactus Garden.

Note that a visit to the factory will be relatively brief, likely an hour or less; it makes an excellent stop on the way to or from a visit to the Hoover Dam.

    Factory Tour

Open seven days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., visitors can take a free tour of the factory. The tour is modest: a simple stroll through the factory that can be as quick or as lingering as you like, concluding in the Ethel M chocolate store, where you’ll get a free sample to enjoy.

And trust us on this: if you haven’t tasted chocolate made fresh, on premises, you don’t know what you’re missing.

Note that since the tour is self-guided and unscheduled, combined with the fact that they produce their chocolates in small batches, you’re not guaranteed to see the machinery working on your visit.

We recommend going outside of lunch hours to maximize your chances of seeing the staff at work. Coming at high season helps too: as Jin Caldwell, Ethel M’s former head pastry chef, explains, “If you come here during holiday season, which is gifting season, then you’re going to see a lot of people working the factory.” She says during those busy times, they sometimes work three shifts.

    Cactus Garden

When you’re finished with the factory tour, head outside to see the factory’s amazing Botanical Cactus Garden.

Boasting beautiful and distinct varieties of cactii – like the Texas Prickly Pear, Teddy Bear Cholla and Bishop’s Cap – and over 300 species of plants spread over four acres, the Cactus Garden displays the Martian beauty of the Las Vegas desert at its liveliest. All of the plants were selected due to their hardiness and ability to adapt to the local climate. Again, the holidays are a prime time to visit: each year, the Cactus Garden lights up into a dazzling display.

    Airport Locations

Did you miss your chance to visit the factory but still want to sample their sublime chocolates? Never fear: you can find Ethel M chocolates at several locations at McCarran International Airport.

  • The Best Pizza in Las Vegas

Vegas is a foodie’s paradise: we boast more than our fair share of celebrity chefs, and we’ve even managed to transform the humble buffet from perfunctory eating into culinary art. (Need some evidence? Just check out R Buffet).

But let’s face it: sometimes you just want to get back to basics, right? Like a delicious piece of pizza pie. Here are our picks for some of the most sinfully delicious slices in the Nevada desert.

    Settebello

140 Green Valley Pkwy, Henderson, NV 89012 – Map & Directions
    http://settebello.net/

This is the pizzeria from which President Obama himself picked up some pizzas to deliver to his Las Vegas campaign headquarters. Maybe he chose them since they were featured in Travel and Leisure, who noted their use of Molina Caputo flour “for a chewy, slightly sour crust” that perfectly complements the use of San Marzano tomatoes and fresh mozzarella and basil.

As you might have guessed from the particular ingredients used, Settebello specializes in Neapolitan-style pizza, meaning thin crusts topped with the freshest toppings, many of which are sourced directly from Italy. In fact, Settebello is a member of the venerable Vera Pizza Napoletana (VPN), established in Napoli in 1984 and which issues guidelines for “true” Neapolitan pizzas.

    Metro Pizza

4178 Koval Lane, Las Vegas, NV 89109 – Map & Directions
    Other area locations also available
    http://metropizza.com/

Metro Pizza co-owner John Arena is something of a pizza legend. He’s even taught classes on the history of pizza at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas! His philosophy of pizza, in his own words: “For a pizza or a pizzeria to approach greatness the entire experience must tell us something about the person or people who created it.”

Entering Metro Pizza, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time to a classic 80s diner. But it’s the expertly prepared pizza that’ll have you coming back for a second visit. And not just the pizza: do yourself a favor and try the (new) succulent meatball sliders on fresh-baked garlic knots.

    Grimaldi’s Pizzeria

    9595 S Eastern Avenue, Las Vegas, NV 89123 – Map & Directions
    Other area locations also available

An import from Brooklyn, Grimaldi’s has successfully carved out a niche for itself in the Vegas pizza scene. We featured Grimaldi’s previously as a great eatery that’s budget-friendly without sacrificing flavor. Their coal-fired brick oven pizza imbues each New York-style* pie with an unmistakable and delicious smokiness, beneath the rich and fresh ingredients that melt in your mouth.

If you’re a meat-lover, try the meatball pizza if it’s available. The meatballs are thickly sliced and generously layered on the pie for a savory explosion of flavor.

    • Just FYI: New York-style is derived from the Neapolitan variety, which is why they’re both thin crust pizzas. For a more in-depth explanation, check out this article from SeriousEats.com.

    Due Forni

    3555 S. Town Center Drive 105, Las Vegas, NV 89135 – Map & Directions
    http://dueforni.com/

Due Forni, a relative newcomer, has received some serious acclaim around these parts. It was this year’s winner of the Best Pizza in Vegas from Vegas Eater. Before that, it got a rave review from the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Due forne is Italian for “two ovens.” The first oven at Due Forni is heated to 500 degrees to bake Roman-style (very crispy) pizza. The second one is heated to 900 degrees, which yields delicious Neapolitan-style pies. According to Vegas Eater, it’s the sheer quality of ingredients that helped push Due Forni to the top.

The Review-Journal has some good advice too: don’t pass up the appetizers. The reviewer particularly enjoyed the carpaccio (which, indeed, is mouth-wateringly good). But if you’re feeling even a little adventurous, we suggest the Polipo: braised octopus tossed with arugula and a light mint vinaigrette. It’s so tender (which, as with calamari, is just so crucial to the success of the dish), with all of the flavors perfectly balanced.

    Bonus: For A Quick Slice

Angelina’s at the Riviera Food Court
    http://newsite.rivierahotel.com/las-vegas-dining/mardi-gras-food-court/

Right here on the Riviera’s own premises, you can find a satisfying slice of pizza pie. Are you going to get quite the same quality of pizza from a fast food court as one of the other restaurants listed? No. But if you’ve just got a hankering for a slice and can’t wait, Angelina’s will help you satisfy the craving – even late (open till midnight).

About to find yourself in Vegas over the Thanksgiving holiday? Here’s a plan for a great Thanksgiving at the Riviera Hotel & Casino.

Start the day off right: The Life Time Fitness Turkey Day 5K

    November 22 at 8 a.m.
Fremont Street and Las Vegas Blvd.

An annual event since 1989, participants can run, walk or jog the 3 mile course, which tours historic downtown Las Vegas. A party immediately follows the race. The cost of registration starts at $25.

A word to the wise: This 5K first came to Vegas just last year, and let’s just say that organization was not its strength. It was still a fun race, but the event itself wasn’t so much on track (i.e., when it came to picking up packets, getting started on time, etc). The official website doesn’t even mention Las Vegas! But the 2012 downtown Las Vegas race is still being advertised.

  • Where the Locals Eat in Las Vegas

The locals always know: the best food at fair prices, and all the hidden gems of their city’s culinary scene. If you’re willing to gamble on some places off the beaten path, you’ll enjoy a culinary payout that beats the odds!

As we’ve previously indicated, Vegas is a gastronomic haven offering a veritable cornucopia of amazing eateries – on the Strip and off. But where do the locals go when they want to get a good meal at a fair price? Here’s a sampling of some of Vegas’ best eats, according to locals.

    Mexican – Lindo Michoacan

    http://www.lindomichoacan.com/
    2655 E. Desert Inn Road
    Las Vegas, NV
    (702) 735.6828

If a local were you take out to eat on your visit to Vegas, there’s a good chance they’d introduce you to local favorite Lindo Michoacan. But you don’t need a local guide: even though Lindo Michoacan is loved by locals, the restaurant also offers free shuttle service between the restaurant and the Las Vegas Convention Center Monorail Station. It’s located about 10 minutes off the Strip.

The fresh tableside guac gets regular raves, but you can’t go wrong with any of the tempting choices from their huge menu. One of our favorite things about Lindo Michoacan? They really strive for authenticity, and it shows with delicious dishes inspired by Mexico City eateries.

    Italian – Piero’s

    http://www.pieroscuisine.com
    355 Convention Center Drive
    Las Vegas, NV 89109
    (702) 369-2305

Located within walking distance of the Strip and the Las Vegas Convention Center, Piero’s offers a classic, old style Vegas experience. You’ll be forgiven if you think you’ve stepped through a time portal into the past when you enter their doors, but trust us, you’ll forget time altogether while you savor dishes like vitello (veal) “del chef” that just melts in your mouth. Expect to spend a little more at this place than others on our local faves list, but you won’t just be dining among locals, you could very well be surrounded by Vegas glitterati.

French Bistro & Wine Bar – Marche Bacchus

    http://www.marchebacchus.com/
    2620 Regatta Drive #106
    Las Vegas, NV 89128
    (702) 804-8008

While dining on delicious French cuisine, you’ll eat up the gorgeous lakeside view while lingering for the live flamenco guitar and old school jazz. But for oenophiles, the true draw is the on-premises wine-market.

When you eat here, the entire store is your wine list, with no bottle ever more than $10 over the retail price. An unbeatable selection of wines, without the retail markup, and a staff that really knows their wine? Bon appétit indeed!

    Cuban – Florida Café

    http://www.floridacafecuban.com
    1401 S. Las Vegas Blvd
    Las Vegas, NV 89104
    (inside the Howard Johnson hotel)
    (702) 385-3013

What’s that, you say? You didn’t come to land-locked Nevada to eat at some café called Florida, offering Cuban island cuisine? Oh, but this is where Vegas’ rich and multicultural dining community really pays off! Otherwise we’d miss the succulent roasted leg of pork and that not-to-be-missed, crispy-sweet Caribbean specialty, tostones (fried plantains).

Don’t let the older, run-down neighborhood turn you off. Once you step inside, you’ll be transported into a cool oasis of Latin flavors.

    R Steak & Seafood

    http://newsite.rivierahotel.com/las-vegas-dining/r-steak-seafood/
    2901 Las Vegas Blvd., South
    Las Vegas, NV 89109
    (702) 794-9233 for reservations

Do locals eat along the Strip? For sure! Sometimes it’s for special occasions, and sometimes it’s just because the restaurant is so darn good! And we’re so happy that locals and guests alike describe our own R Steak & Seafood as a “hidden gem” on the north end of the Strip. Speaking as the people behind this place, we take its quality very seriously. The restaurant manager has even been known to reach out to people who leave reviews!

And if you happen to be local, or are lucky enough to be dining out with some local residents, we’ve got a special offer just for you: a free bottle of wine with the purchase of two entries. See the link above for more details.

Yum.)

In the end, get the burger.  And get a reservation: (702) 407-5303.

    Crepe Expectations
    http://www.crepeexpectations.com
    9500 S Eastern Ave
    Ste. 150
    Las Vegas, NV 89123

Versatile, affordable and downright delicious, crepes are perfect for breakfast, lunch, dinner or dessert.  Vegas favorite Crepe Expectations has the batter down to a science – and even includes gluten-free batters – so that, whether you choose sweet or savory, you’ll always get a meal you relish.

Dividing the menu into “Savory Yum” and “Sweet Yum,” the chefs here cater to every taste bud: take your crepe to Little Italy with pepperoni, mozzarella, and a tomato-garlic-basil sauce.  Or stuff it with veggies such as red bell peppers, mushrooms, zucchini and red onion.  Or take a walk on the sweet side, pairing it with buttered pears, perhaps?  Add in some goat cheese and candied walnuts and honey and you’ve got The Avalon.

Cheap and delicious.  We like that.

    Grimaldi’s Pizzeria
    http://www.grimaldispizzeria.com
    9595 S Eastern Avenue
    Las Vegas, NV 89123
(With other area locations as well)

You like thin crust?  You’ll love Grimaldi’s.  One of Vegas’s most beloved pizza joints, Grimaldi’s serves New York, thin-style pizza and fantastic drinks.

A Riviera tip for you: try to sit out on the patio. It’s a great atmosphere that enhances the meal.

    Banana Leaf Asian Restaurant
