How to elope to Vegas in style!

Image of Wedding Chapel
Las Vegas is the classic destination to elope, because Nevada makes it easy to get married and Vegas has the art of the elopement down to a science. But if you’re worried that eloping means giving up on a grand experience, let us put your fears to rest. Not only is the Riviera the perfect spot for your honeymoon, we’ve made the ultimate wedding as affordable and simple as any eloping couple could hope – and maybe even free! More details on that below.

The Ultimate Elopement

Let’s just say, we’re well practiced at pitching the perfect wedding ceremony. Performing thousands of them will do that! So how does this sound?

Someone Else Handles Every Worry
People don’t elope because they want to make their weddings harder on themselves! So the first step in the ultimate elopement: we assign a practiced, expert personal wedding coordinator. This person shoulders the burden of planning the event and making specific recommendations based on your tastes and personal style. Every detail – sharp photography, delicious wedding cakes, stunning floral arrangements, tailored clothing needs – will be meticulously addressed, and you are free to take charge in the decision-making as much as you wish, or let your personal wedding coordinator handle it all for you.

A Wedding That Lets You Relax
Instead of furiously running around taking care of last minute details and succumbing to eleventh hour freakouts, your wedding experience starts with a day spa pass for two, with a couples massage for the happy couple. Sink into the sublime delights of a local day spa, and let other people take care of the details.

A Ceremony That’s As Entertaining As It Is Beautiful
Here’s where we really shine: whatever flavor or theme of wedding you’d like, we’re ready. We’ve seen it all, and we can put it all together on the fly as part of an affordable package. Looking for a solemn, gorgeous ceremony? The Riviera Wedding Chapel is perfect at proving that eloping doesn’t mean sacrificing dignity. Or maybe you’d prefer a ceremony that spices things up? Then we’re happy to let an Elvis impersonator give the bride away and then entertain the couple with several classic songs.

Celebrate In True Vegas Style
Enjoy a limo ride along the Las Vegas strip with champagne and crystal flutes that are yours to keep. This is a wedding reception done right: a party on the go, either just for the newlyweds or for their small wedding party. No worries about picking a location, selecting a caterer, watching Uncle Bob get drunk and make inappropriate passes at your bridesmaids. Just two lovebirds, and maybe their closest friends or family, celebrating in style.

Add A Little Extra Romance
Still thinking this elopement thing is a little lacking? Please. We’re polished professionals at crafting a romantic atmosphere. How do you feel about a honeymoon suite strewn with fresh rose petals and chocolate truffles, with a primo bottle of champagne or wine awaiting an evening of personal, mutual congratulations between the happy couple?

Elope to Vegas in Style!

Maybe none of the ideas in this post quite struck your fancy? That’s the beauty of eloping to Vegas: you can piece together the perfect ceremony just for you. It can be as fancy and stylish as you see in the movies, or as down-home and off-the-wall as matches your personality. You can work as hard at it as you want, or just let go and let our coordinators magically pull it together.

March 14–17: Saint Patrick’s Day in Las Vegas

http://hendersonlive.com/

Neighboring Henderson, NV will be hosting a St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival, beginning on March 14, at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 Water Street. This year’s parade theme will be The Harp and the Shamrock. Altogether, the festival will offer a carnival, car show and live entertainment in addition to the parade.

If you’d rather celebrate St. Paddy’s Day with a pint, try hitting some local Irish pubs.

  • Hennessey’s Tavern – www.hennesseyslasvegas.com – at 425 Fremont Street. Try the “World’s Largest Pint” at a great pub that favors the “traditional cozy or clubby feel indigenous to Irish pubs.” For the special occasion, you might try their Southern Irish Tenders, or signature seasoned, breaded chicken.
  • McMullan’s Irish Pub – www.mcmullansirishpub.com – at 4650 W. Tropicana. This award-winning pub features an amazingly extensive selection of Irish Whiskeys and Scotches, just the perfect way to celebrate the holiday.

March 19–21: Annual International Pizza Expo

http://www.pizzaexpo.com/

We just featured the best pizza in Las Vegas last month; now, Vegas will be hosting the Annual International Pizza Expo. While the event is aimed at pizzeria owners and operators, it features several events that draw crowds – like the World Pizza Games ® and the International Pizza Challenge ®. The latter challenge is divided into four divisions: traditional, non-traditional, American-pan and Italian-style. Competitors must use ingredients from a common table, including one mystery ingredient.

At its heart, this is the event that inspires many pizzerias in developing and offering new flavors, recipes and presentations. And if you think pizza is just pizza, obviously you’ve never gotten into an impassioned argument about the key differences between Roman, Neapolitan, New York, Chicago, and other style pies!

Vegas celebrates its arts community the first Friday of every month. It’s a fun and family-friendly event that includes artists, vendors and activities. It’s also free, but you may want to bring along some cash if you plan on purchasing any art or taking advantage of the many, many food trucks. The celebration also usually features multiple live bands and live performance “paintings.” It’s one of our favorite events to take the family, get away from the Strip for an evening and discover a cornucopia of artisans specializing in all kinds of media, like painting, photography, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, and more.

For more information about getting there and what it includes, visit their website.

Heads Up: Electric Daisy Carnival

The Riviera is offering added incentive to make your plans early: 25% off our already unbeatable room rates. Book now.

Let It Ride: History of the Game

Unlike all of the other games we’ve featured previously, Let It Ride is truly a modern, American creation.

John Breeding, founder of Shuffle Entertainment, invented an automatic deck shuffler for casinos. In order to popularize the device, in 1993 he created Let It Ride, which is a player-friendly variation of Five-Card Stud (poker). Compared to other card games, Let It Ride is played at a relatively relaxed pace, which makes it a good option for newbies and people less interested in pulse-pounding gambles.

The game first appeared in Reno but continued to spread over the course of several years. By 1995, Let It Ride was generating more revenue for Breeding’s company than the actual shuffler! Today, it’s a very common game; naturally, the Riviera’s own 100,000 square foot Las Vegas casino space offers it. According to the University of Nevada at Las Vegas Center for Gaming Research, as of 2010, there were more Let It Ride units on the Strip than pai gow, keno or bingo games.

How To Play Let It Ride

The game combines three player cards and two community cards, and runs roughly like this:

  1. Cards are dealt – three to the players, two to the community (face-down). The players look at their hands and, before any community cards are revealed, are given the chance to withdraw one-third of their initial wagers.
  2. The first community card is revealed (the second is left face-down). The players again have the chance to withdraw one-third of their initial bets. A player “lets it ride” whenever he or she decides not to withdraw part of the wager.
  3. The second community card is revealed, and winners are determined.

Marketing, The Game

Moving Card Shufflers

Shuffle Entertainment produces gambling devices, most notably an automatic card shuffler called the Shuffle Master. Funnily enough, Breeding had no real background in gambling or casinos. He invented his shuffler after reading an article about card counting. But as casinos began using multiple decks for blackjack, Breeding’s single-deck shuffler found itself being squeezed out.

Ever the entrepreneur, he simply invented a brand new, single-deck game: Let It Ride.

So the game wasn’t invented so much to please gamers as to move products; but obviously to spur adoption, it had to be an attractive game. That’s part of the beauty of Let It Ride: it’s designed to appeal to both players and casinos.

For players, it’s simpler than many casino games, so it’s less intimidating and easier to play. You’ll also note that it gives players more control, with multiple opportunities to change their wager, which is reassuring in a gamble.

House Advantage

Casinos also have reason to like Let It Ride. Like other poker-based games, player skill can affect the house advantage, but the game still offers a relatively high house advantage. Depending on how you crunch the numbers, the casino advantage is either 3.51% or 2.86%. (That means, for three $1 base bets, the casino will earn back – on average – 3.5 cents per hand).

As a point of comparison, the house advantage in craps averages 1.4%.

Even though Let It Ride offers a high house advantage, it compensates with some extremely high payouts on winning hands.

No wonder Let It Ride is popular among players and casinos!

Cheating in Vegas: Protecting Our Casino Guests From Cheats

Cheaters ruin everyone’s day. They make it impossible for responsible players to win, while making it harder on casinos to keep games running fairly. Every casino in Vegas has their own recipe for protecting themselves and their guests from unscrupulous cheaters.

While we obviously can’t go into specifics on our own anti-cheating measures, you might be interested to learn more about some of the tools we generally use to fight cheating. Ultimately, our tactics are designed to keep the playing field level so that everyone who walks into our 100,000-square foot casino game space can have a good time without worrying that someone’s going to take advantage of them.

Eagle Eyes In The Sky

You probably already know that most casinos use surveillance cameras on the game floor. They supplement plainclothes security personnel who wander around and sometimes even join games. With all the action, it’s just not always possible for dealers and security staff to keep track of everything, and cameras can catch what people miss.

Have you ever seen a street magician at work? It’s amazing what visual tricks people can pull off. Our own ILLUSIONS master Jan Rouven can perform downright astonishing visual tricks on a grand scale; but many people have similarly mastered smaller, subtler sleights of hand. And unfortunately, some of them put their tricks to illicit use, like switching cards in and out of a game (called hand mucking).

To catch such tricksters, we have to be equally adept at spotting the cheat. Between cameras and security staff, we pay attention to the details. If we notice unusual behavior, like players repeatedly touching the same spot on their clothes, a security person will quietly take a closer look.

Gaming the Games

Sometimes it’s not about what the cheater can take but about what they can illegally add. Here are a couple of examples:

Roulette: A pair of cheaters work together. One distracts the croupier (dealer), while their partner-in-crime makes a late bet, that is, lays a bet on the table after “last bets” have been called. A late bet is more likely to win because it’s easier to predict where the ball will land as the wheel slows. Dealers are specifically trained to watch for this tactic, and plainclothes security personnel frequent these tables, but you can also be sure that multiple video cameras are monitoring the roulette tables.

Craps: Here, a cheater might throw in crooked dice (weighted dice). This is harder to pull off, but we still keep our eyes alert to it. This kind of cheat is also part of the reason why casinos switch out dice so frequently and permanently retire dice after little more than a partial day’s worth of play.

Data Detectives

Like any detective work, often it’s just a matter of connecting the right dots to figure out what’s going on. We don’t have access to endless information about the people who play in our casinos, but we notice if there are unusual patterns in the financial transactions that take place. Frequently, it comes to nothing. But sometimes, it pays off when it alerts our people to shenanigans.

Which brings up an important point…

The Best People

We will happily use security technology where it helps us catch cheaters before they can ruin everyone’s game; but the best security means more than just dumb tech. It means smart, observant and experienced people, both dealers and security staff.

Casino employees who are in on the cheat are rare; casinos go to great lengths to ensure they hire the right people for the job. That said, it happens. That’s why casinos employ a sort of “checks and balances” system to keep everyone honest. Dealers may not – and in fact, rarely do – know all of the plainclothes security personnel who are mingling, wandering, and even playing. Even the watchers are watched!

Safety First

Altogether, we employ every tool and technique we can to ensure everyone has a great gaming experience. Learn more about our Las Vegas Casino games and policies. Our dealers and staff are always happy to answer questions and introduce you to the games.

Wind will still be cool, so you might want to keep a jacket with you.

Matching the weather, February is full of cool events in the area; but to offset the chill, we’ve got a hot deal for you. Read below about a special room rate we’re offering for early birds.

Spotlight on the Ethel M Chocolate Factory

Riviera – Spotlight on the Ethel M Chocolate Factory

Ethel M Chocolate Factory

2 Cactus Garden Drive, Henderson, NV 89014 | Map
http://www.ethelm.com/

Chocolate Lovers Rejoice!

If you love chocolate, you won’t want to miss this delicious morsel: the Ethel M Chocolate Factory, tucked into the southwest corner of the Vegas community.

Founded by Forrest Mars and named for his mother, the Ethel M Chocolate Factory produces gourmet chocolate through recipes that haven’t changed since their inception. In fact, the factory is still family-owned and operated; chocolate is produced in small batches and boxed by hand; and the chocolate is crafted solely with premium ingredients. As the factory likes to say, “Eat chocolate, not preservatives.”

That’s not to say the famed chocolatiers don’t innovate. A few years ago, under the leadership of then head pastry chef Jin Caldwell, they produced a new line of dozens of custom designed, handmade chocolates while simultaneously re-releasing several varieties of classic, old-school chocolates.

The chocolate factory is a certified hit: it attracts almost 1 million visitors from all over the world visit every year. They come for the chocolate; for the free, self-guided factory tour; and for the beautiful Botanical Cactus Garden.

Note that a visit to the factory will be relatively brief, likely an hour or less; it makes an excellent stop on the way to or from a visit to the Hoover Dam.

Factory Tour

Open seven days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., visitors can take a free tour of the factory. The tour is modest: a simple stroll through the factory that can be as quick or as lingering as you like, concluding in the Ethel M chocolate store, where you’ll get a free sample to enjoy.

And trust us on this: if you haven’t tasted chocolate made fresh, on premises, you don’t know what you’re missing.

Note that since the tour is self-guided and unscheduled, combined with the fact that they produce their chocolates in small batches, you’re not guaranteed to see the machinery working on your visit.

We recommend going outside of lunch hours to maximize your chances of seeing the staff at work. Coming at high season helps too: as Jin Caldwell, Ethel M’s former head pastry chef, explains, “If you come here during holiday season, which is gifting season, then you’re going to see a lot of people working the factory.” She says during those busy times, they sometimes work three shifts.

Cactus Garden

When you’re finished with the factory tour, head outside to see the factory’s amazing Botanical Cactus Garden.

Boasting beautiful and distinct varieties of cactii – like the Texas Prickly Pear, Teddy Bear Cholla and Bishop’s Cap – and over 300 species of plants spread over four acres, the Cactus Garden displays the Martian beauty of the Las Vegas desert at its liveliest. All of the plants were selected due to their hardiness and ability to adapt to the local climate. Again, the holidays are a prime time to visit: each year, the Cactus Garden lights up into a dazzling display.

Airport Locations

Did you miss your chance to visit the factory but still want to sample their sublime chocolates? Never fear: you can find Ethel M chocolates at several locations at McCarran International Airport.

  • Gates A & B: Located outside of AB Security entrance (Across from Chili’s Restaurant)
  • Gate C: Located between Gates C4 and C5, next to the Coffee Bean

The Riviera Guide to Las Vegas Wedding Themes

The Riviera Guide to Las Vegas Wedding Themes

Mulling the glitter and glam of Vegas for your own wedding? If so, you’re in good company: Las Vegas draws millions of engaged couples here each year to celebrate their nuptials. It’s partly the low cost and easy process for getting a license, but there’s more to it than just that.

In our previous post on weddings, we explained why Vegas is the perfect place to elope when you don’t want to deal with all that who-sits-where wedding planning ju-jitsu. But our humble city offers far more than just a streamlined wedding: we promise a fun one. That’s because it’s so easy to create your own personalized, themed wedding that matches the happy couple’s personalities perfectly.

Here’s the Riviera’s quick guide to some of the most popular Las Vegas wedding themes.

Elvis Weddings

This one’s a classic: Elvis. Presley himself married Priscilla here in 1967 at the original Aladdin Hotel (now Planet Hollywood).

Elvis impersonators are a dime a dozen ’round these parts, and being married and serenaded by Elvis is sure to spark a cool wedding whose memories last a lifetime. Not sure where to scare one up? Contact the Riviera wedding coordinators. You can even choose what role Elvis plays in your ceremony: do you want him to officiate? sing? escort you down the aisle? or maybe you want to dress as Elvis? Bonus option: entertain with a Priscilla impersonator as well!

An incredible number of local chapels and casinos offer Elvis-themed weddings, a testament to his enduring legacy here. The Riviera can help: just contact our wedding planning staff to set up your own Elvis dream wedding.

Horror & Fantasy Weddings

Here’s where things get colorful. Down the Strip you’ll find a famous (or infamous?) year-round haunted house, Eli Roth’s Goretorium … at which you can totally get hitched. Wedding packages include a minister dressed as a zombie, vampire or god of gore; appropriately gruesome reception hall; themed cakes; and … of course … a walk through the attraction. Packages start at $666.

You can also find other horrifying weddings that will leave you (or maybe just your mother-in-law) with lifelong nightmares: local wedding chapels can organize weddings themed around Michael Jackson’s Thriller, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Dracula, a graveyard setting or zombies.

If you’d like the fantasy setting but not so dark, don’t worry, you’re covered! You might opt for a Camelot or medieval wedding, replete with dashing knight marrying ravishing royalty.

Honorable Mention: A Cirque Wedding

Love Cirque du Soleil and similarly-styled shows? Then this Las Vegas wedding theme is for you: the Viva Las Vegas Wedding Chapel (highlighted in our post on eloping) offers this magnificently memorable theme. In additional to a theatrical production setup, an aerial team will perform in the air above you during the ceremony.

Want to make your Las Vegas wedding theme a reality?

We’re here to help…we at the Riviera can take care of every detail of your dream ceremony. Just reach out to our wedding chapel and we’ll start planning a wedding that will blow you and your guests away.

Have another wedding theme in mind, or want some more ideas? We’ve only just scratched the surface in this post. Stay tuned for some additional posts with more Las Vegas wedding themes and tips on creating the perfect theme.

The Best Pizza in Las Vegas

Vegas is a foodie’s paradise: we boast more than our fair share of celebrity chefs, and we’ve even managed to transform the humble buffet from perfunctory eating into culinary art. (Need some evidence? Just check out R Buffet).

But let’s face it: sometimes you just want to get back to basics, right? Like a delicious piece of pizza pie. Here are our picks for some of the most sinfully delicious slices in the Nevada desert.

Settebello

140 Green Valley Pkwy, Henderson, NV 89012 – Map & Directions
http://settebello.net/

This is the pizzeria from which President Obama himself picked up some pizzas to deliver to his Las Vegas campaign headquarters. Maybe he chose them since they were featured in Travel and Leisure, who noted their use of Molina Caputo flour “for a chewy, slightly sour crust” that perfectly complements the use of San Marzano tomatoes and fresh mozzarella and basil.

As you might have guessed from the particular ingredients used, Settebello specializes in Neapolitan-style pizza, meaning thin crusts topped with the freshest toppings, many of which are sourced directly from Italy. In fact, Settebello is a member of the venerable Vera Pizza Napoletana (VPN), established in Napoli in 1984 and which issues guidelines for “true” Neapolitan pizzas.

Metro Pizza co-owner John Arena is something of a pizza legend. He’s even taught classes on the history of pizza at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas! His philosophy of pizza, in his own words: “For a pizza or a pizzeria to approach greatness the entire experience must tell us something about the person or people who created it.”

Entering Metro Pizza, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time to a classic 80s diner. But it’s the expertly prepared pizza that’ll have you coming back for a second visit. And not just the pizza: do yourself a favor and try the (new) succulent meatball sliders on fresh-baked garlic knots.

Grimaldi’s Pizzeria

9595 S Eastern Avenue, Las Vegas, NV 89123 – Map & Directions
Other area locations also available

An import from Brooklyn, Grimaldi’s has successfully carved out a niche for itself in the Vegas pizza scene. We featured Grimaldi’s previously as a great eatery that’s budget-friendly without sacrificing flavor. Their coal-fired brick oven pizza imbues each New York-style* pie with an unmistakable and delicious smokiness, beneath the rich and fresh ingredients that melt in your mouth.

If you’re a meat-lover, try the meatball pizza if it’s available. The meatballs are thickly sliced and generously layered on the pie for a savory explosion of flavor.

  • Just FYI: New York-style is derived from the Neapolitan variety, which is why they’re both thin crust pizzas. For a more in-depth explanation, check out this article from SeriousEats.com.

Due Forni

3555 S. Town Center Drive 105, Las Vegas, NV 89135 – Map & Directions
http://dueforni.com/

Due Forni, a relative newcomer, has received some serious acclaim around these parts. It was this year’s winner of the Best Pizza in Vegas from Vegas Eater. Before that, it got a rave review from the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Due forne is Italian for “two ovens.” The first oven at Due Forni is heated to 500 degrees to bake Roman-style (very crispy) pizza. The second one is heated to 900 degrees, which yields delicious Neapolitan-style pies. According to Vegas Eater, it’s the sheer quality of ingredients that helped push Due Forni to the top.

The Review-Journal has some good advice too: don’t pass up the appetizers. The reviewer particularly enjoyed the carpaccio (which, indeed, is mouth-wateringly good). But if you’re feeling even a little adventurous, we suggest the Polipo: braised octopus tossed with arugula and a light mint vinaigrette. It’s so tender (which, as with calamari, is just so crucial to the success of the dish), with all of the flavors perfectly balanced.

Bonus: For A Quick Slice

Angelina’s at the Riviera Food Court
http://newsite.rivierahotel.com/las-vegas-dining/mardi-gras-food-court/

Right here on the Riviera’s own premises, you can find a satisfying slice of pizza pie. Are you going to get quite the same quality of pizza from a fast food court as one of the other restaurants listed? No. But if you’ve just got a hankering for a slice and can’t wait, Angelina’s will help you satisfy the craving – even late (open till midnight).

January 2013 Events in Las Vegas

January is definitely a chilly time to visit Vegas, with lows in the 30s and an average high temperature of 57 F. Which makes it the perfect time to get cozy in our casino and just have fun playing some games, followed by a show or two. If you’d like to get out of the city for a spell, consider a tour of Hoover Dam or a visit to Springs Preserves before their special show, Dr. Entomo’s Palace of Exotic Wonders, closes.

At the Riveria Casino and Hotel in January

ILLUSIONS Starring Jan Rouven

If the cold weather has left you shivering, warm up with one of the hottest shows on the Strip: ILLUSIONS Starring Jan Rouven. We highlighted this show back in October, and with death-defying acts like the Fire Spiker, this is a spectacle that’s sure to chase the chill away.

Crazy Girls

Still looking to heat things up? Look no further than Vegas’ sexiest topless revue, Crazy Girls. Their sizzling performance blends beauty, music and comedy in the perfect proportions.

The International Consumer Electronics Show

January 10–13, 2013 at the Las Vegas Convention Center
http://www.cesweb.org/

The International CES is “the world’s largest annual innovation event.” In other words, it’s the place to check out new products and gadgets, like the newest in 3D TV sets or gaming systems. Unfortunately, tickets can be hard to come by, as the show isn’t open to the public. But considering the show brings with it some 150,000 attendees, even if you’re not one of them, chances are good you’ll run into some pretty cool CES folks out-and-about in the area.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade

Monday, January 21, 2013 at 10 a.m. in downtown Vegas
http://www.kingweeklasvegas.com/

Our annual celebration of MLK Jr. helps keep Dr. King’s dream alive in the Las Vegas community. The 2013 theme is “Living the Dream: Dream with a Vision, Live with a Purpose.” The parade is a wonderful way to join in; it starts at Fourth Street, from which it heads north to Ogden. Other events in the weeklong celebration of Dr. King’s life include an Annual Scholarship Gala. Visit the website for more details.

Dr. Entomo’s Palace of Exotic Wonders

Through January 13, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Springs Preserve
http://www.springspreserve.org/

Catch it while you can: this special exhibit will be closing mid-month. Where else can you experience the luminous horror of scorpions that glow in the dark or the terrifying goliath bird-eating tarantula? Dr. Entomo’s Palace of Exotic Wonders showcases marvels of the insect (and arachnid) world in an old-fashioned circus-style sideshow. In all seriousness, it’s truly spectacular to witness the sheer diversity of the just-plain-weird lifeforms that call our planet home.

If you’re a Bank of America cardholder, you might try to visit on January 5 or 6, when you get free admission (see below for more details).

Bank of America Museums on Us® (Free)

First Friday Art Celebration (Free)

Friday, January 4, 2013 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Downtown Arts District
http://www.firstfridaylasvegas.com/faq.htm

New Year’s Eve 2012 in Las Vegas

Image of fireworks from resort rooftops

New Year’s Eve in Vegas is explosive! Literally: hotels along the Strip will launch fireworks from their rooftops for the crowds on the street to enjoy. And that doesn’t even begin to count the myriad shows and parties across the city. Here’s the Riviera’s guide to unforgettable New Year’s Eve 2012 happenings in Sin City.

At The Riveria

December 30: MC Hammer and Tone Loc

http://newsite.rivierahotel.com/special-events/mc-hammer/

It’s Hammer Time at the Riviera! Get your New Year’s party started early by spending an evening with two iconic performers: MC Hammer and Tone Loc, who will be hosting New Year’s festivities on December 30. Who doesn’t remember, even two decades later, MC Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This,” performed in those memorable parachute pants? (See the bottom of this post for a blast-from-the-past video.) He’ll be joining us for a rocking good time, proving that he’s “Too Legit to Quit.” He’ll be joined by Tone Loc, a hip-hop star in his own right, best known for his Grammy-winning hit “Wild Thing.”

December 31: Exciting New Year’s Shows!

They say your choice of activity on New Year’s Eve indicates what you’ll spend the next year doing. If that’s so, the Riviera has got you covered. You can spend the evening laughing (at the Riviera Comedy Club) or awestruck (by the magic of Jan Rouven).

On The Strip

For another option — or perhaps a place to take the party before or after the shows above — just head out our front door. The Las Vegas Strip is actually one of the coolest places to ring in the New Year. Last year, Fireworks by Grucci of New York launched a show from the roofs of numerous casinos, making for an amazing, explosive light show that lasted nearly 10 minutes and included over 56,000 explosions!

Las Vegas Blvd. closes to traffic around 6 p.m., so the few hundred thousand pedestrians expected to attend can get the party started. The people-watching rivals any major holiday, including Halloween, with enthusiastic revelers filling the Strip. The atmosphere is simply electric. Tip: alcohol could be surprisingly hard to come by, partly due to the sheer wall of people, partly due to the fact that many people will start their party as early as noon.

Elsewhere

The Fremont Street Experience

http://www.vegasexperience.com/ (Warning: audio starts automatically when you load the page)

Like the Riviera (above), the Fremont Street Experience is also giving partiers a chance to start early. The fifth annual, two-day TributePalooze begins on December 29. As the name implies, the festival hosts tribute bands who play homage to rock greats like the Rolling Stones, U2, Bon Jovi, Queen, Led Zeppelin and more.

Then on New Year’s Eve proper, starting at 6 p.m., you can rock in the New Year at the Fremont Street Experience’s New Year’s Eve Party. They’ll be featuring some amazing musical talent, like Buckcherry, Queensryche and a ton of local favorites. The event will also include a cool 2012 retrospective on the huge Viva Vision screen. Midnight will see a synchronized fireworks show.

Tickets start at $30 per person if purchased early; 21 and over only.

The Great Gatsby Party

December 31, 2012 at 1420 Jet Steam Drive – Las Vegas, Nevada 89052
More Information & Tickets

In the mood for something totally different? CollectiveZoo will be hosting “A Great Gatsby New Year’s Eve” at Sky Combat – The Hangar (a very cool location often used for private parties). Tickets are a bit pricey — $89 is the cheapest, as the early-bird special for General Admission — but they’ll get you partying in the two private airplane hangars, with a big band and a 7-hour open bar. Dress formally: tuxedos and 20s-style flapper dresses.

And Now, A Blast From The Past.

The History of Baccarat

Image of Baccarat spread

What is Baccarat?

We might thank James Bond for Baccarat’s prominence in pop culture: it’s the favored game of author Ian Fleming’s most famous spy-hero. Bond plays Baccarat in multiple Bond books and movies, like Dr. No and the 1967 version of Casino Royale.

Usually regarded as a “classy,” high-stakes game frequented by high rollers, Baccarat differs from many other gambling games which can require complex knowledge and skills. Instead, Punto Banco – the most common form of Baccarat in the United States – is strictly a game of chance where the player (punto) simply compares his card to that of the bank (banco). You’re literally playing the odds in this game. Interesting, the game has both some of the lowest (just over 1%) and highest (over 14%) house edges of any card game, depending on the bet.

There are three major versions of Baccarat in play today:

  1. Punto Banco: by far the most common form in most casinos; the casino is always the bank in this version.
  2. Chemin de Fer: the original form of Baccarat when it was introduced to France, and still the most popular form there; participants rotate the “player” and “bank” roles whenever the banker loses.
  3. Baccarat Banque: Similar to Chemin de Fer, except the banker role doesn’t rotate until all cards from multiple decks shuffled together have been dealt.

Most casinos, including the Riviera Hotel & Casino, host “mini baccarat” tables with lower limits. That means the game isn’t reserved to just high rollers, and everyone can enjoy this fast-paced game.

Origins

The earliest origins of Baccarat are simply unknown; in fact, its beginnings are more obscure than many other games. Theories abound, of course. Some say it was partly derived from non-card games like the Chinese Pai Gow, which was played with tiles. Perhaps Marco Polo brought the game back to Italy with him in the late 13th century. Certainly most sources claim that Baccarat originated in Italy because, they say, “baccarat” means zero in Italian. That is, however, untrue.

We do know that the first mention in print by a contemporary observer happened in the mid–1800s in France (in Album des Jeux by Charles Van-Tenac), so wherever it originated, Baccarat definitely made a major detour through France, as so many games of chance have.

The version of Baccarat played in Vegas when it was first introduced was indeed the French Chemin de Fer, here called “Chimney.” Alas, that game never really caught on.

Then casino boss Tommy Renzoni brought the Punto Banco variation to America, after he encountered it in Argentina at the Mar del Plata Casino. Interesting fact: For the first several decades after its introduction in the mid-twentieth century, casinos employed a “shill” or “prop player” at their Baccarat tables, someone who would play just to keep the action going. (They’re not nearly as common today).

Baccarat Glossary:

  • Punto or Player: You.
  • Banco or Banker: Generally, the house or casino, but sometimes players will rotate this role.
  • Tableau: Fixed drawing rules, i.e. how the cards are dealt; varies according to the type of Baccarat played. Just ask our casino staff for an explanation when you sit down to play; they’ll be happy to introduce you to the game!
  • Croupier: The dealer.
  • Coup: A single, full round of play.
  • Shoe: A collection of several decks shuffled together; all cards are dealt from the “shoe.”
  • A Baccarat: Any individual card or entire hand with a value of zero. (FYI: Cards 2–9 are worth face value while 10s, Jacks, Queens and Kings are worth zero. Aces are worth one. To value a hand, you add up all cards. If the total number is 10 or greater, the value is equal to the rightmost digit. So a Queen, 3 and 7 — which add up to 10 — is worth zero; and both the Queen card and the entire hand are considered baccarats. A hand of 2, 4 and 8 adds up to 14, so that hand’s value is four.)

Jamey Johnson has rocketed to Nashville stardom since he self-released his first album, They Call Me Country, in 2002. Since then, the award-winning artist has been lauded by fans and critics alike for his exceptional The Lonesome Song. Rolling Stone, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times are just a few of the major publications that sang its praises. He followed it with his album, The Guitar Song, which hit the top spot on the U.S. country music charts.

Of his own success, Jamey says simply, “All I ever wanted was to get to just ride around and sing country music. It’s cool when things happen along the way, because those are things I never thought I could achieve.”

In October of this year, Jamey released his latest effort, Living for a Song: A Tribute to Hank Cochran. He worked with many of country music’s finest voices, like Allison Krauss and Lee Ann Womack, to honor one of country’s greatest musicians, and Jamey is bringing his tribute tour to the Riviera this month.
